All entries will be judged anonymously. Judges will choose up to three winners. Winners will be notified by email. Winners will receive a literary gift basket (including letterpress prints, gift cards, and more), be published on the Hazel & Wren website, and be invited to read at a Minnesota book launch event for Jeff Smieding’s And Their Passing, A Darkness: The Salt Machine in the spring of 2014. No purchase necessary to be eligible for contest.
Choose one of the three excerpts from The Salt Machine and use it (in its entirety) in your piece (beginning, middle, or end):
1.) One night, near the end of an unusually cool and cloudy summer, it was George’s turn to cry.
2.) She was tall and thin, with watery eyes and fishbelly white skin.
3.) “Vera?” he called out again. All he could hear was the ratatatat of rain on the leaves and the ground.
Write away! And be sure to submit before the deadline of Friday, January 31!
