Worth Your Salt: A Fiction Contest

salt-machine Pub MarketHazel & Wren announces a fiction contest, inspired by the And In Their Passing, A Darkness: The Salt Machine serial (Red Sofa Books), by Jeff Smieding!

Contest Judges: David Oppegaard (author of The Ragged Mountains), and Esther Porter (Revolver editor).

Winning submissions (up to three winners will be chosen) will be published on the Hazel & Wren website, be invited to read at the March 2014 book launch for The Salt Machine in Minneapolis, and receive a literary gift basket chock full of greatness! Said basket includes a free ebook copy of The Salt Machine, the entire Volume 1 of Thirty Two Magazine plus a gift subscription to Volume 2, a copy of Andy Sturdevant’s Potluck Supper with Meeting to Follow from Coffee House Press, a letterpress print from Hazel & Wren, a pocket notebook, a finger puppet (Yes, you read that correctly. A finger puppet.), and the best part: a pint of custom-flavored ice cream from Froz Broz. HOLY SMOKES. And to top it all off, the first prize winner will also receive a $25 gift certificate to Common Good Books.

RULES:

– Entry Fee: Absolutely free!
– Submissions must be received between 9:00 am Monday, January 13 and 11:59 pm Friday, January 31
– Must be fiction, and must be original, unpublished works by the writer (aside from the prompt excerpt used)
– Total word count limit must equal 2,000 words or fewer
– Must use one of the three prompt excerpts listed below somewhere in piece.
– Must follow submission format: Attach a <.doc>, <.docx>, or <.rtf> file that does not contain your name or other identifying marks, to the submission form below.
– Limit one entry per person.

The Fine Print:

Writers entering the contest retain all rights to their entries. By entering this contest, you agree to abide by the rules and agree that decisions by the judges are final.

All entries will be judged anonymously. Judges will choose up to three winners. Winners will be notified by email. Winners will receive a literary gift basket (including letterpress prints, gift cards, and more), be published on the Hazel & Wren website, and be invited to read at a Minnesota book launch event for Jeff Smieding’s And Their Passing, A Darkness: The Salt Machine in the spring of 2014. Please note that any travel costs associated with reading at the book launch are at the winner’s expense.

PROMPT:

Choose one of the three excerpts from The Salt Machine and use it (in its entirety) in your piece (beginning, middle, or end):

1.) One night, near the end of an unusually cool and cloudy summer, it was George’s turn to cry.

2.) She was tall and thin, with watery eyes and fishbelly white skin.

3.) “Vera?” he called out again. All he could hear was the ratatatat of rain on the leaves and the ground.
